Take Action!

In Numbers 27: 12 – 13, God instructed Moses to climb a mountain east of the River Jordan, and gaze upon the promised land.  God told Moses that he would die upon doing so.  Knowing this, Moses did exactly as instructed.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on the night before his death, said he had gone to the mountaintop, and his eyes had seen the promised land.  Knowing the dangers around him, and perhaps knowing his time to come home had arrived, Dr. King bravely continued to take action.

Unfortunately, many of the social issues Dr. King faced are still relevant today.  According to Drs. William H. Cosby and Alvin Poissant in their book “Come On People”:

* Homicide is the number one cause of death for black men between fifteen and twenty-nine years of age and has been for decades.

* Ninety-four percent of all black people who are murdered are murdered by other black people.

* In some cities, black males have high school drop-out rates of more than 50 percent.

There are even more statistics about the social ills impacting African-Americans (males in particular), and the poor (irrespective of race or gender) that are just as horrifying.  This is why I decided to take action, and founded “The Berlack Method, LLC.”  I came to understand that I could talk about these issues, and go about my business day-to-day, or I could use my God-given gift of public speaking to DO something about it!

That’s why I’ve partnered with SharperMinds Consultants to facilitate a series of community open forums, addressing topics such as: “Parent UP! Who’s Parenting Who?”, “Enough Already!  Stop Using the ‘N’ Word!” and “Does ‘No’ EVER Mean ‘Yes?’ Dating and Domestic Violence Exposed.”  More importantly, our organizations stand ready to TAKE ACTION once the forums are completed, by training parents, youth and corporate staff to overcome the issues that have plagued us for decades and more.

Appropriately – we’re starting with parents.  On February 17, 2011, at Pimlico Elementary/Middle School in Baltimore Maryland, from 5:30 – 7:00, we are prepared to engage parents and community stakeholders in the kind of “uncomfortable conversation” that will force us all to stand up, take notice…and TAKE ACTION!  Our love of each other and our communities is not enough – we must be honest in open conversation with one another if we are to make the sacrifices of Dr. King, and Moses, real.  They both went to the mountaintop knowing their deaths were near…can we do any less for our children and our communities??

I think starting with parents is a great idea. The parents must take charge of their children and start to teach them about the history that the African American people have endure and overcome. Sometimes though, I think some workshops and panel discussions end up preaching to the chior. the parents that are present at the meetings are already doing the right things with their children. Its the parents that are not their that need to be reached.

I hear you Vernon. The audience often is “the choir.” That’s one of the reasons we’ve decided to webcast our forums. We want the masses to have the ability to engage in the dialogue.

I’d also point out that both the working class and the poor struggle with similar issues, irrespective of race or gender. That’s another part of the equation that many of us are not discussing. We’ll discuss that and more during the forums!
