R.U.L.E.S for Black Men Symposium

On Saturday, November 13, 2010, I had the distinct pleasure to be a panelist and presenter at the R.U.L.E.S for Black Men Symposium held on the campus of Morgan State University.

The Brothers of the Pi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and the members of S.M.O.O.T.H. (Strong Men Overcoming Obstacles Through Hard-Work), produced this inspiring and educational event.  Omega Psi Phi is, of course, an esteemed and historic organization for men, founded at Howard University in 1911.  S.M.O.O.T.H., on the other hand, is a contemporary organization founded in the fall of 2009 as a male student organization created to give members a place to grow academically, ethically, and socially during their tenure at Morgan State University.

The symposium was open to the general public, and Morgan students attended as well.  Job Corps brought teens and pre-teens in from Delaware and Maryland to gain fatherly and brotherly advice from the esteemed panel and workshop presenters.

I sat on the opening panel which discussed everything from the societal impact of fatherless homes to business advice to gender relationships in the black community.  Not surprisingly, the young audience peppered the panel with insightful questions on all topics.  I was proud to be part of an inter-generational discussion that prayerfully laid a foundation of activism and communal concern in a group of future leaders.

I also presented a workshop entitled “Man Up!” which explored the history of the black male role in our own community and in the greater American melting pot.  I also instituted elements of The Berlack Method’s Life Skills Training Series to explore the role of discipline and accountability in the black male’s path to success in the future.

As always, I’m proud to serve the community in this way.  There are strong, brave and ambitious young men out there who need the guidance and support of their elders.  Thanks to Omega Psi Phi, S.M.O.O.T.H. and Morgan State University for providing a wonderful opportunity for all.

It’s good to know that there are resources for our kids to take advantage of that will aim them in a positive direction. The thing that is most powerful for me is the fact that the children can actually see what a positive role model actually looks like, walks like and smells like. This, to me, may be more important than any discussion or class. You guys are walking proof that, in spite of it all, you can still accomplish what you dare to dream. Thanks.

  • My cousin recommended this blog and she was totally right keep up the fantastic work!
