Life Imitates Art – Presidents Obama & Shepherd

A movie that I’ve seen and enjoyed several times on cable is “The American President,” starring Michael Douglas and Annette Bening.  In what seems to be pure Hollywood storytelling, President Andrew Shepherd (Douglas), is a widower and single dad whose wife died of cancer three years earlier.  He is roundly criticized by his Republican rival during an election year when its discovered that President Shepherd is…<<gasp!>> dating.  The point of the attack is that Ms. Wade (The President’s love interest played by Bening) has a controversial past in which she attended rallies many years before during which the flag was burned in protest. Not only is this brought out, but the President’s morals and parenting abilities are publicly attacked because of it.

President Shepherd refuses to acknowledge the attacks or answer them, despite repeated and desperate attempts by his staff to do so, given his plummeting approval rating.  Without giving away too much of the plot, the climax comes when the President finally has enough and gives a SCATHING retort in a press conference just before the State of the Union address.  The theme of his response: being President is an incredibly serious job, with serious issues confronting him and his staff daily.  The President points out that his rival does not have the moral compass to criticize someone whose service to her country includes decades of fighting for the very rights the rival was looking to shut down.  More importantly, the issues that he as President faces make a focus on his private love life and her decades-old past seem utterly ridiculous and petty.  In his speeches, the rival trumpets: “I am Bob Rumson and I’m running for President!”  To which the President finally replies: “We have serious issues and it takes serious men and women to handle them.  These are serious times and your fifteen minutes are up.  I’m Andrew Shepherd and I AM the President!”

Amazingly, this is not far from what’s happening today with “The Birther” attacks on President Obama.  SERIOUSLY??  At 45 years old I have NEVER heard of an attack on the President as mundane and as far outside the REAL issues of the day as this one.  With thousands of American soldiers losing their lives overseas, gas prices over $4 a gallon, high unemployment, another fight over states’ rights 150 years after the start of the Civil War (this should be its own post), a battle over nationalized health care and who should or should not shoulder the tax burden and to what degree, I applaud the President this morning for FINALLY addressing how idiotic it sounds to waste time discussing the President’s place of birth.

President Obama is our President.  Mine and yours.  GET OVER IT ALREADY.

I have no qualms with Republicans or Democrats.  The fact is, I see merit in some of each platform.  However, the only thing that VOTERS really care about is our elected officials acting like grown-ups, getting over their ideological differences, and allowing our connection as AMERICANS to trump all other issues so that we may prosper as a nation.  WE ARE ALL CONNECTED!  The sooner we realize that, and the sooner we see the betterment of all elements of our society as the betterment of America, the sooner we can fulfill the promise of our great nation.

You may disagree with the President’s politics and policies.  You may believe in states’ rights, big business and the limitation of the federal government.  But that’s the PRESIDENT you’re talking to.  Show him the respect he deserves, and debate him on REAL issues.  As for all the other nonsense, your fifteen minutes are up.

EXACTLY…GET OVER IT ALREADY, AND MOVE ON!!! ONE OF MY GRIPES IS THAT ALL WHO VOTED AGAINST OBAMA WANT HIM TO PERFORM A MIRACLE. SURE THEY MAY SAY OUT LOUD NOW THAT HE IS IN OFFICE, OH YEAH THAT BARACK OBAMA IS DOING A GREAT JOB. ROME WASN’T BUILT IN A DAY, GIVE THE MAN A CHANCE, BUT WHAT THEY REALLY WANT TO SAY IS “TAKE YOUR TIME “AHEM AHEM” BUT HURRY UP!!! THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT WE ARE ALL IN THIS THING TOGETHER, & THE SOONER WE COME TO GRIPS WITH IT, THE BETTER OFF WE ALL WILL BE. ARE YOU WILLING TO HOLD YOUR BREATH FOR THAT MOMENT TO COME?

I find it a little ironic that you wrote, “However, the only thing that VOTERS really care about is our elected officials acting like grown-ups, getting over their ideological differences, and allowing our connection as AMERICANS to trump all other issues so that we may prosper as a nation.” Because it was Trump that finally brought closure to an issue that has plagued this president since his election. (Or at least I pray it’s finally over!) Conspiracy theorists will surely debate the validity of the document, but I will not go there. Enough already!

I don’t think this was an issue about anything other than principle. I know some folks scream this was racial – but I can’t imagine that every person who has ever run for public office has not had to provide proof of citizenship. I had to for a civilian job! (And I’m a white female, as you know Steve.) This wasn’t silliness, in my opinion it was silly to drag it out this long. Something so simple!!

And another thing – respect is earned – I can honestly say that I was routing for him and curious about how he would lead us…until I learned that he attended a church that spews hatred of America and white people. Even though he disowned them, (conveniently when it came to light) if he stepped foot in that church more than once knowing what was being “taught” – it spoke volumes to me personally. “A wolf…..”

    Good points Steve!!
I am also happy top hear that the President responded back by showing his birth certificate, which was a great way to say now shut the *&%% up!

Excellent points Steve. I do not agree with President Obama having to prove his place of birth. This man has had to show his birth record for every step in the development of his life.. Does Donald really believe that President Obama never had to show his birth certificate in order to hold any of the other political offices? YOU CAN’T GET A DRIVER’S LICENSE WITHOUT PROOF OF BIRTH! Come On Man be real. This is a face issue.. ( I purposely never use the word “race”) and if President Obama’s face looked like Donald’s then we would not have a complaint.

HOWEVER, OUR PRESIDENT.. (that’s right Donald! The Honorable President Barack Obama is YOUR President too! ) IS CONFIDENT AND TOO GRACIOUS TO IGNORE THE IGNORANCE OF THE “BIRTHERS” (whatever that means.. because it sounds like a job delivering animal offspring but hey they are in a way delivering a bunch of bull).

So here we have the opportunity to stand up for our leadership and stand against those that would want to undermine our government by exercising freedom of speech in a responsible, contributory way. No garbage DONALD DUMP can spew will be as damaging as our own unenlightened rhetoric.. I WISH PEOPLE WOULD STOP JOKING THAT THEY VOTED FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA BECAUSE HE IS OF THE SAME FACE.. that really ticks me off!!! It gives false credibility to the ‘BIRTHERS’ AND ‘TEA PARTY’ supporters that if African Americans didn’t have the right to vote, President Obama would never have been elected.. COME ON PEOPLE..

I have never seen our President so annoyed and yet he maintained the dignity of becoming a president of any “face.” With all of the back door dealings in the Bush Administration it’s a wonder no one asked to see his birth certificate to ensure he didn’t have connections with countries “over there.”

STEPPING UP YOUR GAME STEPS UP THE GAME FOR US ALL … NO MATTER WHAT THE FACE!
